50-Amp Outlets

The Outlet Most Homeowners Don't Know About

Here's something most people in Sumter don't realize: the same 50-amp NEMA outlet you'd use for an RV is the same one you'd use to charge an electric vehicle, and the same one you'd use to backfeed a portable generator into your house.

One install. Three uses. Got an RV in the driveway? Plug it in. Going to buy a Tesla or a Rivian next year? You're ready. Storm knocks the power out and you bought a generator? Plug it into the same outlet.

Jay installs these outdoor 50-amp outlets in a weatherproof box on the side of your house, typically near the panel. The job involves running a dedicated 50-amp circuit from your panel, installing the receptacle, and weather sealing the install.

Common Questions

Things People Ask About This Service

The 50-amp NEMA 14-50 receptacle is the standard plug for RV camp sites, the same plug Tesla mobile connectors and most EV charging cords use, and the same plug a portable generator backfeed cord uses. Same voltage (240V), same amperage capacity (50A), same physical receptacle. Different appliances plug into it for different uses.

If you want to actually power your house from the generator, yes. The 50-amp outlet alone won't backfeed your panel safely without an interlock kit or transfer switch. Jay installs both. The outlet alone is also useful for plugging in a generator to run an RV or specific appliances directly.

Legally and safely, no. This is a dedicated 50-amp 240-volt circuit on your main service panel. It needs to be permitted, inspected, and installed to code. The risk of an incorrectly wired backfeed circuit is electrocuting a lineman during an outage. That's why this is a job for a licensed electrician.

Anywhere on your property, but wire size goes up with distance. Jay will figure out the right gauge for the run based on length and amperage. Most installs are within 25 feet of the panel.

Most jobs are 3 to 5 hours including the testing and clean-up. Longer if Jay has to fish wire through finished walls.
